Big Bertha The Fiat Ducato Motorhome Conversion

Great Yarmouth Racecourse – Trip Report

So this weekend just gone saw us out in Bertha for our first proper trip of the year. To date she has just been keeping herself busy being used as an occasional run around. With a round trip of 120 miles I’m pleased to say the old girl performed faultlessly.

As the trip coincided with the first day of the racing season, and as a novice who has never been to the races before you can see where this is going.

The Campsite

Given that we were combining a trip in the van, with a weekend at the races the choice of site was obvious. We stayed at The Caravan and Motorhome Club site at Great Yarmouth. This is a site we had stayed at before and were more than happy to return to. The site itself is situated in the middle of the racecourse, so of course made things very handy for the races on Saturday.

So what can we say about the site?

As with previous visits to this site, the toilet and shower block was kept spotlessly clean. The site wasn’t overly busy this time, but previously this hasn’t had an impact. There are plenty of hookup points around the site and this is included in the pitch fee. One thing to note – not all hookups are adjacent to the pitch, so it’s worth making sure you have a long hook up lead with you. If you are unlucky with the pitch you get you may need a 15-20m lead.

The site wardens. From the warm welcome, to the immaculate facilities, the team on site were a credit to the club and the site.

Wifi and Phone Signal

Whilst we were staying the club wifi was unavailable according to notices displayed around the site. This had no impact on us however as phone signal was decent on all networks we found. Between work and personal devices we had decent or good coverage on O2, Vodafone and EE.

A day at the races

The site for obvious reasons doesn’t allow arrivals on race day, so a day at the races requires a two night stay. To access the site you have to drive through the area where all the horseboxes park. Then, you cross the track. So having arrivals on race day just isn’t practical understandably.

The site is in the middle of the track, so access is easy and just a short walk. On saturday there was a very strong wind, so we did cross the track and go back to sit in Bertha for a bit to warm up. The ease of access is fantastic.

Discounted tickets are available from the site office on the day of the races. When we stayed general admission tickets were on offer at half price. However, it is worth pointing out they are on a cash only basis between 10-11am.

Overall

We had a great trip. The fact we were returning visitors to the site says all you need to know really. Getting into town is a pleasant half hour or so walk along the front from the site. The views out over the dunes are worth the walk alone. Great Yarmouth used to have a patchy reputation for being a bit run down. However, we have found on our l;ast two visits that really isnt the case any more. The town has spent a lot of money on regeneration and is quite a nice seaside resort again now.
