🔋 Common Types of Leisure Batteries
⚡ Lithium (LiFePO₄) Batteries
- These are the best choice overall for off-grid and heavy use — lightweight, high usable capacity, very long lifespan (often 2,000–5,000 cycles or more).
- They can safely discharge ~80–90% of their capacity without risk of damaging the battery (much more usable energy than lead-acid).
- Lithium batteries offer faster charging and provide a more stable voltage under load.
- Higher upfront cost, but typically better value in the long run.
Good if: you camp off-grid often, run big loads (fridge, inverter), or want long lifespan and minimal maintenance.
🔋 AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) Batteries
- A sealed lead-acid option that’s maintenance-free and spill-proof.
- Generally cheaper than lithium and reliable for many camper setups.
- Lower usable capacity (~50% of rated Ah) and shorter cycle life than lithium.
Good if: you’re on a tighter budget or only need moderate power on occasional trips.
🔋 Gel Batteries
- Lead-acid type with gel electrolyte (sealed and non-spillable).
- Often better suited for vibration and deep discharge compared to basic lead-acid.
- Typically more expensive than basic lead-acid and slower to recharge.
Good if: you want a sealed lead-acid battery with somewhat better deep-cycle performance.
🔋 Standard/Sealed Lead-Acid (Flooded)
- Cheapest option, but heavy and requires regular maintenance unless sealed.
- Lower cycle life and you should avoid deep discharges to help protect the overall health and lifespan of the battery.
Good if: you only use hook-ups at campsites and don’t run heavy loads.

- Power needs & off-grid use: If you’re often away from hook up power or run fridges, lights, hobs or inverters for long periods ➝ Lithium is usually the best long-term choice for your motorhome conversion.
- Budget & occasional use: If you only use your campervan occasionally and only need lights/USB charging, AGM or gel can be cost-effective.
- Maintenance tolerance: AGM and lithium are sealed and low-maintenance; basic flooded lead-acid requires more attention.
- Weight & space: Lithium is lighter and smaller for equivalent usable power.
